The NICU Story

I'm sharing this story only so I can remind the girls when they are older...way older. Editing from those who were "awake" for all of this is welcomed.

A week ago today was one of the worst days of my life up to this point. I know in life you are going to pass obstacles that are going to be hard to overcome. To this point, I have had some rough patches, but this, by far, was the worst. After your baby is born and you hear the cry, it is an instant sigh of relief. In my case, two cries put my mind at ease and tears of pure joy ran down my face. They were here, they were safe, they were alive, my liver problem would officially be over and I would have no more pains and no more medicine. Well, I was wrong. Although the girls were 5 weeks early, we all thought that everything was going to be perfect despite Amelia's small size and the fact that the cord was wrapped around Adalyn's neck at birth. After the girls were born, they both scored a 9/10 on their Apgar test. This is the test that is given right after birth to evaluate if emergency care is needed. In their case, the answer was no.

They were cleaned, their footprints complete, swaddled and put into Aaron's arms and I watched him look at them. Everything was perfect besides the fact I wasn't able to wipe my own tears, hold them, or even give them a name.  No one was taken away in an emergency and I was still alive. Everything really was perfect. I was aware of everything going on and my wonderful doctor was talking to me as she was finishing her job. Specifically,  I remember her telling me that now my cousin and I had matching Dr. V specials.

After the procedure was over, we went back to the room with the babies. We fed them, took pictures, and sent them to the nursery so I could get some sleep because it was in the one o'clock hour of the morning. I apologize now to my friends for the text message I sent them at 1:41 a.m. that the girls had arrived! I guess time stops when you arrive at the hospital during the night! I didn't get much sleep that night because I was itching like crazy and it was driving my mom crazy. She had stayed with me and sent Aaron home to be with Jayden. She planned on leaving early that morning and then Aaron would come back with Jayden to meet his sisters. At 3 or 5 am I finally took medicine so I would stop itching and it would make me fall asleep. I am sure this was a good thing, but it really make me feel crazy and stupid. I remember talking to Aaron's mom on the phone, I remember someone talking to me about Aaron's social security number for their birth certificates as well as their names (I gave her the wrong social security number and no names for the babies), and I remember some lady talking to me about the girls' newborn pictures. I am sure 6am-8am is a normal time to talk to someone, but not after they took a sleeping pill a few hours prior. Needless to say, I don't think much was accomplished in any of those conversations. I bet I sounded like a zombie. I am also pretty sure a million text messages were coming through my phone of people asking for the names of the girls and all of their stats. I could tell them nothing but weight and length, which I believe I got wrong and just the names baby A and baby B.

On Wednesday morning when I woke up or the nurses woke me up, I can't remember,  they told me they would be back at 9:30 in the morning with the babies for me to feed them. Well, 9:30 came around and no babies were back in the room. Something wasn't right.

From what I have heard, Amelia (B, as they called her) had stopped breathing and the doctors were working on her, when one turned around they saw that Adalyn (A) was blue and not breathing either. I am pretty sure that someone shouted "twin A isn't breathing" and someone replied "twin B?", and someone answered "no, twin A!" Adalyn did this five times in a short period, so she had to be tubed and moved to the NICU at St. John's. I guess it was mad chaos in the nursery during this situation and one of my mom's church friends was there to witness the entire emergency. This is not something I would want to see in my entire life. Ever.

I remember a nurse coming to me and saying that our baby A, Adalyn had stopped breathing and was going to be transported. That is when I made everyone leave the room except Aaron--well my Mom stood at the door because she understands nurse talk. I don't.  A really nice nurse from St. John's came in along with a neonatologist, Dr. Nimavat, and explained to us what happened to Adalyn to the detail. They told me that they would bring her into my room, so I could say goodbye and explained what I would be seeing when they brought her in. The next thing I knew they wheeled her in my room, on a stretcher, with a breathing tube in her mouth, laying lifeless hooked up to a machine with a million cords in a closed crib. I think this is officially when she got her name. I wanted her to leave me with a name in case she didn't come back. That picture is not what you want to see for anyone, especially your own. It is so hard to understand and so hard to watch your little baby be taken away from you after everything was so perfect just the night before. Aaron rode in an ambulance with her to St. John's so she didn't have to be alone. As for me, I was stuck in bed helpless to the situation.

At this point, I know that Amelia, who still didn't have a name, wouldn't be able to come back to my room because she had to be under the warmer and was hooked up to three different monitors and had IV's in her hand and foot. Only two visitors were able to come back to see her including me, which meant only one person could visit with me. They didn't want us to hold her because of the IV and the feeding tubes, but finally when Aaron came back from being with Adalyn I was able to hold her. I pretty much lost it at that point. One baby away not knowing how she was and what was going on and one tiny baby laying hooked up to what seemed to be a million different things.  However, Amelia was in better shape than Adalyn. She was a fighter. She had to fight for space. Had to fight for food and now she proved to be the one that was doing the best at her mere 4 lbs 7 oz weight versus her sister who was almost a pound bigger. This is how she became Amelia, which means fighter. It wasn't until the next day, January 5th,  that she officially had a name besides "Sweet Pea".
Aaron communicated to me the different tests they were going to give Adalyn. They tried for a spinal tap and she had a brain sonogram. Holy cow. Those words scared me to death. All I could think was that she had a brain bleed and she wasn't going to make it. When you google "brain sonogram" there are a lot of scary words that pop up. I thought she had a terrible infection and that we were going to be spending forever in the hospital trying to get her better. I just pictured her little face on cans sitting in gas stations and collecting change from people to help her fight this unknown battle. I know you shouldn't think the worse in situations like this, but when you are in that situation you do. You feel guilty for not donating that $1 to Children's Miracle Network and St. Jude's when people ask you at the store.

The doctors thought the girls had infections causing their spells of apnea, so they put both of them on very high doses of antibiotics while running a million blood tests to check for everything under the book. This simply made me sick that something more was wrong than them just being premature. I don't think I slept for two days after this just crying and worrying about the girls. I thought maybe it was my fault they were sick because I was still up on my feet doing things around the house and taking care of everything you do as a mom up until the hour before we went to the hospital. I thought maybe this liver problem had caused them problems. Really, my mind didn't stop and I am sure that contributed to my lack of sleep.

This wasn't supposed to happen. It seemed like it took forever to get any answers from anyone about what was going on. I tried my best to hold it together, of course I cried here and there, and only truly lost it, I mean lost it once because I was so confused, worried, and tired. I'd say Wednesday was the worst day and night for me up to this point in my life. I don't even remember who stayed with me that night. I think it was Aunt Jane and then Aaron came up late. I couldn't be alone, but I didn't want Adalyn to be alone either. It was hard. I think I cried myself to sleep that night because I felt so guilty that both babies had no one with them for the first time in their life, but at the same time, I couldn't be alone.

Things started looking up after a few days, from what I can remember. I feel for anyone who has to go through anything worse than what we did. I have learned from the other babies with Adalyn, that our situation wasn't and isn't the worst, it was just scary because it happened so fast and it was so unexpected. Really, what happened was for the best.  There are so many sick little babies at St. John's and I feel so blessed that out of those babies, ours ended up being the healthy one. I met another mom who was on best rest for 6 weeks, had triplets at 30 weeks, and would be staying and visiting her babies until March 16th, which would be the earliest discharge date. She lost feeling in her foot and is living at the Ronald McDonald House because she can't drive over an hour each day to see them.  Or even worse the sweet little baby next to Adalyn had her eyes sewn shut today because of a rare skin condition she has. Her parents have to wear gloves to touch her. Now that throws things into perspective for you and makes you thankful for the short stay and worst day you went through. Their nightmares are still continuing and my bad dream is finally ending.

A week later and after a lot of trips to St. John's and Memorial, I packed a bag for sweet girl Adalyn with her coming home outfit. It is half as full as it was when we went to the hospital the first time. It makes me sad that she had to spend her first week of life mostly alone after spending 35 weeks with her sister. It makes me even more sad that poor Amelia, who we thought would be home first, is still at the hospital trying to grow and get strong so she can come home too. I can't wait to have the sisters back together with each other. I know they are going to be happy. I just hope they send that identical twin vibe to each other that identical twins have (just ask a set) and Amelia continues to eat more at each feeding (she ate 50cc for me tonight then nursed and only eats around 40cc for the nurses) and will be home soon. I hate it for her that her stay might be twice as long as Adalyn's. However, I know that she needs to grow and stay warm, but right now I think I am to the point that she would be better off with me than where she is right now. However, that is another story for another day.

Keeping growing sweet pea and sweet girl!! We will be visiting Amelia tomorrow then heading to St. John's to pick Adalyn up and bring her home. I am anxious, excited, nervous, and sad all at the same time. I just hate that little Amelia is still all alone while Adalyn will be home in our arms. At the same time, the third string on my heart has been tugging all week for big boy to be home with us too. I haven't heard his little voice or funny little words since Saturday! Three babies away from home for over a week, just might be too much for one momma to handle but I guess I haven't had three babies at home to compare it to!

Thank you to our friends and family for all of your phone calls, text messages, Facebook messages, and visits to the hospital to check on the girls and me during our rough week. We are really lucky to have so many people who care about us and keep thinking of us. I am sorry if you text or called and I haven't gotten back to you. I know you understand and soon enough I can't wait to talk on the phone to some of my friends. I need that!  Thank you to our friends and family who put the girls on their prayer lists at church. A special thanks to my Mom and Aunts who spent hours sitting with me, listening to nurse reports or sitting feeding babies when I couldn't. I know all of the love has helped the girls grow!

1 Week Old

A week ago tonight, I was in a lot of pain. I tried my hardest not to cry and just let it pass with a back rub as I had done the previous nights.
A week ago tonight, my mom and Aaron convinced me to go to the hospital.
A week ago tonight, I told the nurse she would be sending me home in an hour or so because this was the same pain I was having for the past few days.
A week ago tonight, I was getting admitted to the hospital at 10:38 pm and welcomed our girls into the world at 11:10 and 11:11 pm.
A week ago tonight, our family grew in size and our hearts grew full of more love than we ever thought possible.

Happy One Week Birthday, Adalyn and Amelia! It has been a long week without you home!

Adalyn update: Adalyn, who we expected to be second to come home, is on the road to being on home on Thursday. She passed her 90 minute car seat test today and is eating around 50cc of milk at each feeding. She is in a big girl crib, wearing pink, and maintaining her body temperature. She had visitors today who were finally able to hold her for the first time. Previous to this no one was allowed to hold her except for Aaron and I. The doctors and nurses had orders to not allow others to hold her because it would wear her out and cause her to burn unnecessary calories.

Amelia update: Poor sweet pea is just so little. She is in her own clothes, but still living in her little "house". They are decreasing the temperature as long as she eats well and maintains her temperature after each feeding. She has to eat at least 35cc of milk at each feeding, but Grandma can get her to eat 40. She didn't gain any weight and no talk of her coming home was mentioned today. Holding her is also limited, but today I decided that she needed some love. We will continue to pray that she gains some weight and continues to grow so we can bring her home. I bet she just misses her big sister!

Blogger will not allow me to upload pictures tonight, so I will try again tomorrow!

What are the odds?

What are the odds that Jayden would be having a blast in Mt. Carmel away from his Mom and Dad? Those of you who know him, might be a little worried. But guess what?!? He is loving it and being the PERFECT boy. He is having fun getting special attention from our family and loving having a buddy to play with during the day.

What are the odds that these two little sweet girls would be identical twins? The answer: 1 in 2,000. Path results came back today that they are in fact identical twins. Right now we are able to tell them apart with their weight differences, but soon that could be a different story!
What are the odds that I got a rare liver condition while pregnant with them? The answer: 1 in 1,000. Thank goodness I am cured from that and feeling 100%!
What are the odds that I would win the lottery? Slim to none, but maybe I should buy a ticket!

On a brighter note, Adalyn was moved out of her "house" today and into an open crib. I can't wait to see her in the big girl bed. She is going to look so tiny! Aaron stopped by after work today to see her and Amelia. I will be there bright and early tomorrow on their one week birthday. Amelia had a good day too. She is starting the process of being slowly moved back to an open crib rather than just moved out. I hope by the time I get there tomorrow she is in a big girl bed too. Both girls can now eat as much as they want and as long as things continue to progress we will have them home in no time and possibly by the weekend.

So this weekend might be a big weekend for us. All five of us in the same place at the same time. I can't wait  for that moment and to see that picture!

Keep growing and staying warm little girls. We are ready for you to be home!
Jayden--you keep being a good boy too. We miss you like crazy and can't wait for you to come home and point at us and say "It's Mom...it's Dad!"
Maybe you will get lucky enough to have another weekend away at Nana's because you actually proved to us that you are a big boy and not a baby anymore!!

5 days new

Our sweet girls are 5 days new! We spent the day traveling between the girls, getting some rest, and adventuring out to Wal-Mart. Pretty exciting day!
Adalyn's feeding schedule is before Amelia's, so we stop at St. John's first on each of our adventures. The nurses there are so nice and are doing a great job of taking care of Adalyn. Tomorrow is a big day for her. She gets to move to an open crib. I packed up a bag of clothes for her tonight to wear for the next few days. No more ugly white shirts. It is time for pink!!
Sweet girl is taking between 40 and 50 cc of milk and loves it. She hasn't had any spells for a few days now and is putting on the weight. Somebody, no names mentioned, is a sucker for a little girl in pink...well, actually two girls in pink. I don't think Aaron can get enough of his little princesses. I can't either!
Sweet pea Amelia was passed out sleeping when we arrived. She just reminds me so much of Jayden who we are missing like crazy right now. He is spending time with his Nana in Mt. Carmel and visiting everyone down there for the week. I am sure he misses us too, but I know he is safe and being well taken care of, so it makes his absence a little easier to handle. Pictures from his Nana also help. Thank the Lord for technology which is surrounding all three of our babies right now.
Little Amelia is always a tired little girl when we are there to visit because she is growing. She has been doing well the past few days too. If we could get her to keep her body temperature up, that would be a step in the right direction. She isn't on any IV feedings or anything else. We just need her to gain weight and stay warm!
\
Amelia is eating around 40cc of milk at each feeding and is allowed to have more if she wants it. Her weight gain continues and we want her to keep moving in a positive direction.
I couldn't resist the bows today. I know they are giant, but it is all we have and they are so small! I've got to say, we have the prettiest girls in the NICU at both places even when they are dressed in all white. There is no doubt about that!!

Keep growing, sweet girl and sweet pea. We are hoping to have you home by the weekend. Fingers are crossed, thoughts are positive, and we are ready to come get you as soon as the orders are written and the phone rings.

Thank you again friends, family, and even strangers who are keeping the girls in their thoughts and prayers. We are so blessed to have so many people thinking of our family. It just amazes me!

A Visit with Adalyn and Amelia- 4 Days New

Today we went to visit both girls a couple of times. Two girls. Two hospitals. One day. Two worn out parents.
We stopped to see Adalyn first today so we could make it to her feeding. She is 30 minutes different than her sister. Currently she eats at 12, 3, 6, and 9.
Jayden was allowed to go in to meet his sister. He really didn't understand and wanted nothing to do with being in the hospital. I think his fear of doctors will remain with him for a while.
Poor Amelia is missing from our family picture. Soon enough we will have a picture of all five of us!

Sweet pea Amelia had to go back into a closed crib today. Little girl couldn't keep her temperature up, so she is back in the warmer. She is a mini version of her sister, with a little less hair. I am sure it will grow in a flash if she is anything like her Momma and brother!
We were able to take her out for a little while and hold her. She was happy to hear her Momma and Daddy talk to her.
Although Adalyn and Amelia are apart, we have little hearts that they sleep on each night. We will switch them back and forth daily so they have each others scent and work to get stronger!

We love you little girls. Grow, grow, grow!! We can't wait to have you home!

Welcome Adalyn and Amelia

Welcome to the world Adalyn and Amelia!! On January 3, 2012 we welcome our twin baby girls into the world at 11:10 and 11:11 p.m. Adalyn was 5 lbs., 5 oz., and 18 1/2 inches long and Amelia was 4 lbs., 7 oz., and 17 1/2 inches long. They arrived five weeks early and six days earlier than planned. We were very lucky to make it to the hospital just in time for their arrival. Good thing Grandma and Aunt are nurses because otherwise this story may end up a little more crazy!

Daddy, Amelia, Mommy and Adalyn an hour after they were born!
Grandma Nieves with Amelia and Mommy and Adalyn

After snuggling with the girls in my room for a while, we sent them off to the nursery. After they went to the nursery, things took a turn for the worse with each girl. Adalyn and Amelia's early arrival into the world caused a few breathing problems that has prompted their continued care in the NICU at St. John's and Memorial.

This is Amelia in her "big girl crib" after two days of being in a warmer. We are keeping our fingers crossed that she can keep her body temperature up and stay in this crib until she is able to come home.
Today, Amelia was able to take a bottle for the first time. Such a great stride in order for her to improve.
Our little Adalyn really put us to the test and proved to be dramatic. She was moved to the NICU at St. John's for her care. Being the bigger sister, we thought she would be the strong one, but little Amelia proved to be the stronger one. I think we will save that story for another day after she is home in our arms. Today I was able to be discharged from the hospital and hold Adalyn for the first time since after she was born.
Daddy has been spending a lot of time with Adalyn at St. John's while I spent time in the hospital at Memorial visiting with Amelia every moment possible while I was trying to heal.

Get well soon, sweet girls. We love you along with many other people you don't even know!! Everyone is cheering for your recovery.

Happy New Year 2012: A Recap of 2011

Happy New Year 2012! We rang in the new year last night with our friends at the Haugens' household. The boys enjoyed themselves in the basement while the girls relaxed upstairs and chit chatted. It seems like 2011 passed so quickly and there was so much going on. I watched my best friend get married, three of my other friends brought home new babies, we sat through two of Jayden's surgeries anxiously, sold our house, bought a new house, moved to a new town and have watched my belly grow as we are so close to welcoming Jayden's sisters into the world.

Here are some of our best memories of 2011! We are looking forward to the wild ride of 2012!!

Jayden's Best Week Ever!

Jayden has had the BEST WEEK EVER with both his Mom and Dad home, all day. Every day. We have enjoyed breakfast, lunch and dinner together all week, plenty of episodes of Mickey Mouse, playing with his new toys, and nap time! Last night we headed to Chuck E. Cheese for one last "family of three" outing!
I am sure Jayden shot over 1,000 baskets and played 50 games of bowling. He hit up the ski ball game for a couple rounds too. I did, however, catch the big kid playing some games too.

This weeks ranks pretty high on my best week ever. I love being home with both of the boys. It has been so nice!!

Merry Christmas

Merry Christmas to our friends and family both near and far! I can't believe that Christmas has already passed by so quickly. It crept up on me so fast and then was over in an instant. This year we stayed in Central Illinois due to my inability to travel and being so close to welcoming the twins into the world. It was nice to be home in our own beds and visit with family here, but at the same time we really missed the Christmas traditions in Southern Illinois.
Aaron's family came up for a quick visit and Christmas celebration. We were all spoiled as usual and Jayden got a brand new 4-wheeler to ride this spring along with some other cool gifts.
He also got a new train table from Poppy along with another train and race track before they left for Canada to visit with Steve, Suzy, Lia, and Alex. Jayden loves choo choos!!
I guess Santa thought Jayden was a good boy this year because he made the stop at our house! Jayden got a new hoop that goes to 6 ft. It is a lot bigger than his last one and he loves it. He still has the shooters touch. He got a lot of other little goodies too.

After the gifts were unwrapped we headed upstairs for some yummy cinnamon rolls. I had planned to make a new Christmas breakfast for the boys in our new oven, but I didn't have the energy. Maybe we can try it next year because from what Pinterest says it is super easy and it looks super yummy! I also of course wanted to try out my new kitchen and appliances, but I guess cookies for Santa is a start. A huge thank you to Aaron for accomplishing this task before Christmas! What an awesome gift!
Now it is time to enjoy the rest of our week at home. I think my greatest gift of all is spending the entire week at home with no agenda, no rush to get anywhere, and just hanging out with the boys before the babies arrive. Jayden is loving having both his Mom and Dad home for an entire week all by himself.

Merry Christmas!!

33 weeks and counting!

This week we had our week 33 check for the babies. Baby A weighed in at 4 lbs. 8 oz. and Baby B weighed 3 lbs. 14 oz. Baby B was being difficult or maybe shy and wouldn't show her face but Baby A was right there for all to see. We will spend the next few weeks of Christmas break resting and trying to put on a few more pounds before they make their grand entrance!

A Visit with Santa

We were hoping that this years visit with Santa would be a little more successful than last years visit, but it pretty much went the same. Jayden knows that "Ho,Ho" brings presents and he has watched Santa on Mickey Mouse for the last month, but he wasn't so thrilled when we went into the little house! He screamed a few times and then just looked at him like he was a fool.

We got a better view outside of the house where Santa waved and that was enough for Jayden! Better luck next year! I can't believe that Christmas is only a week away!
